Tiger Escapes Briefly at OKlahoma Zoo

A Tiger on Thursday escaped its enclosure at the Oklahoma city zoo. A “code red” was issued by the institution and some visitors were sheltered inside buildings, USA Today said
based on local media reports.

Tara Henson Zoo spokeswoman ensured NewsOk that the Sumatran Tiger, Lola, never entered area accesible to the public.

A veterinary team was able to tranquilise her within about 20 minutes. There were no injuries. Lola was taken to the tiger holding building for observation and is doing well Oklahoma Zoo Executive Director Dwight Lawson said.

“She was contained at all times” he said. “We responded with the code red because we were not sure how she got out of the enclosure. But the staff responded appropriately. Our priority is public safety.”

The Zoo detailed that Lola had been seen in an enclosed space between two exhibits of Cat forest habitat; she was mobilised by just after 2p.m and normal operations resumed at 2:25 p.m, detailed USA Today.

Affiliate of Oklahoma City ABC KOCO-TV claimed that she had attacked another cat but the zoo did not mention any such incident.

Rob Vermon, a spokesman for the association of Zoos and Aquariums, that a report on the incident would be requested by his accrediting organisation.

He contended, “ We were glad to see everything resolved without incident to the zoo personnel or the tiger.”

Sumatran Tigers were put on its list of critically endangered species in 2008 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

This means they are only two levels below extinction. At the time only 500 animals remained and the number is declining warned the organisation.
